Why does the same Housing Unit cost more?

In the October 31 player log, the same Housing Unit had different Terraform requirements depending on whether it was the first, second, third, fourth or fifth settlement building. Check the next building’s own requirements before committing to a sequence. Waiting alone does not restore a settlement or add population.

Use the rule for your next decision

  1. Treat these as build-order examples, not a universal recipe

Psyfur recorded the following Housing Unit values in a settlement discussion. The post does not label a precise region for each row, so these are examples from that playthrough, not guaranteed requirements for every region or version.

    2nd5kNone listed
    3rd10kNone listed
    4th75k1 Purified Water
    5th150k1 Nutrient Meal
  2. Compare the next position and the current building panel

Check which building you are planning to place next in the settlement sequence, then compare its displayed Terraform threshold and any item requirements with your available supplies. The same post reports different order-based values for Med Station and Wayfinder too, but is not a complete recipe list. Do not substitute a Housing Unit row for a different building.

  3. Restore settlements to raise population

The official settlement description says you locate ruined settlements and rebuild them; restored settlements awaken settlers and raise population. Defend them as you work toward the population goal. Terraform structures and settlement population are different tracks.

  4. Plan around available supplies rather than copying a lucky run

The player also described a low-wave route but explicitly attributed the available water and oxygen partly to luck. Use the requirements to decide what you can afford, not as a guaranteed build order. If the next building needs food or water, check the sources available in your region.

What success looks like

The next settlement building’s current requirements are affordable, the restored settlement increases population, and you can distinguish that result from a Terraform-only gain.

If you are still stuck

If your panel differs, follow your current panel rather than the dated example. The source does not establish fixed costs for every settlement, a complete ingredient list, or a guaranteed wave count.
